The Indigenous Justice Coalition is a youth-driven organization based in the Bay Area advocating for social justice, protecting the environment, and preserving cultural heritage through education across communities. Founded in 2023, our mission is to amplify Indigenous voices and address systemic inequities facing Indigenous communities. Through targeted initiatives such as political advocacy, leading environmental projects, and providing educational programs, we strive to empower Indigenous leaders and address service gaps.

Cultural Bearer of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe Joey Torres Explaining the History of the Muwekma Ohlone People

California faces a long-overlooked injustice: the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, native to the Bay Area, was falsely declared “extinct” in 1925 by anthropologist Alfred Kroeber. This erasure was cemented by Superintendent Lafayette Dorrington, who illegally removed 135 tribes—including the Muwekma—from federal recognition rolls. Today, gentrification threatens to displace tribal members from their ancestral lands. Inspired by Niemöller’s poem “First They Came,” we believe that when one community is marginalized, everyone’s rights are at risk. By equipping students to lead advocacy efforts, we support both youth leadership and long-standing movements for social justice.
